Ilves-Hockey Oy

Ilves forward Matias Maccelli, 19, has been named Liiga rookie of the year. The vote was made by Finnish ice hockey journalists. Maccelli is the 12th Ilves player to be awarded the Jarmo Wasama Memorial Trophy as the Liiga’s rookie of the year.

Matias Maccelli signed a 2+1-year contract with Ilves in the spring 2019. During his rookie season in the Liiga Maccelli tallied 30 points (13 goals and 17 assists) and led all rookies in scoring. He was Ilves’ third best scorer and finished fifth in points.

Maccelli, who will be awarded with the Jarmo Wasama Memorial Trophy, also represented Finland at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship that were played in Czech Republic at the turn of the year. The forward scored two goals and added three assists in seven games. In February Maccelli played his first games for the Finnish men’s national team representing the country in Beijer Hockey Games, which is part of the Euro Hockey Tour.

Maccelli was by far the number one vote for hockey journalists. He received 40 first-place votes and amassed 249 points in total.
